It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown – Themed Dinner

We capped off our Halloween dinner series with a menu inspired by It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown has been a timeless Halloween tradition since it first aired in 1966.  Based on the comic strip Peanuts, this animated special follows Charlie Brown and his friends as they celebrate Halloween.  However, Linus chooses to forgo his friends’ traditional celebrations, and instead spends Halloween waiting in a pumpkin patch for the mythical Great Pumpkin.

Our Great Pumpkin dinner was inspired by Charlie Brown and his friends as well as Linus’s “sincere” pumpkin patch!

Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown Charcuterie Board

To kickstart our Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown dinner, I made a charcuterie board with sweet and savory treats.

The center of our board was a cheeseball with a silhouette of Snoopy rising out of the pumpkin patch.

I created the pumpkin patch around Snoopy with lettuce and pumpkin candies, then added Charlie Brown and his friends in their ghost costumes.

I created the trick-or-treaters using Peeps Ghosts and an edible black marker to add the details of each costume.  Charlie Brown (having had trouble with the scissors) had multiple eye holes throughout his costume.  Pig-Pen, on the other hand, was recognizable by the filthy state of his ghost sheet.

I filled the rest of the board with various meats, cheeses, and crackers to fit the spooky scene!

Edible Rocks

Poor Charlie Brown can’t get a break.  Even trick-or-treating earned him nothing but a bag of rocks!

“I got a rock.”

So, I had to incorporate rocks on our menu.  But these were tasty rocks Charlie Brown would approve of!

I originally wasn’t sure how to make rocks edible for our menu, but then I discovered a fantastic recipe by Julie Van Rosendaal.  This was a no-bake recipe which called for very few ingredients – my favorite type of recipe!

These morsels really looked like rocks – I even had my family fooled.  And they were delicious to boot.  This would be a fantastic recipe to make with little ones, or perhaps utilize for some light-hearted pranking!

Pumpkin Mandarin Oranges

For a healthy side, I made a pumpkin patch with mandarin oranges.

“Each year, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch that he thinks is the most sincere. He’s gotta pick this one. He’s got to. I don’t see how a pumpkin patch can be more sincere than this one!”

These were super simple to create, yet adorable!  All I did was peel the oranges, then insert a pretzel rod for the stem and a bit of parsley for the leaves.  It doesn’t get easier than that!

Snoopy Pizza

If you follow this blog, then you know I love to use pizza as a food art canvas.  So, for our Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown dinner, I made a Snoopy pizza!

I first baked a frozen pizza until it was golden brown.  Then, I topped it off with thinly sliced mozzarella for Snoopy’s face, pepperoni for his ear, and sliced black olive for his eye and nose.  Once I was happy with my design, I popped the pizza back in the oven for a few minutes to get the cheese melty.

This was another dish that was super simple to throw together, but the kids absolutely got a kick out of it.

Pumpkin Patch Brownies

To complete our Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown dinner menu, I made pumpkin patch brownies.

I first made a pan of brownies and frosted it with chocolate frosting.  Then, I covered the frosting with crumbled Oreo cookies to look like dirt.

To create the vines and leaves, I played around with green icing and various piping tips I had on hand.  I’ll admit, I had way too much fun during this step!  Finally, I topped the brownies with every pumpkin candy we had in the house (the kids were thrilled).

I’d say our pumpkin patch brownies would rate pretty high on Linus’s sincerity scale!

I hope you enjoyed our Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown themed dinner.  With Halloween being only a few days away, I want to wish you all a happy and safe celebration!
