Addams Family Dinner and a Movie
They’re creepy, and they’re kooky, and the inspiration behind this week’s themed dinner. Tonight, we celebrate the Addams Family with a mysterious and spooky dinner menu that really is a scream!
You rang? Welcome, readers, to an evening of gloom and misery where dinner is delightfully dreadful, and the company is altogether ooky. Our Addams Family dinner menu features macabre morsels inspired by each strange and deranged family member.

So, step into the flickering candlelight of our decaying abode, and don’t mind the howling screams and lingering shadows. Now, for the crucial question: salt, pepper, or cyanide? This will certainly be an evening to die for.

Morticia’s “Play With Your Food” Soup
Morticia is all about gothic elegance and class, so I wanted a menu item that captured her dramatic, dark aesthetic.
My mind immediately went to ube due to the purple yam’s striking color. So, I used a recipe from The Hint of Rosemary to make a purple sweet potato soup.
Even though I was expecting a purple color, I couldn’t believe how vibrant the soup was!
To spookify each bowl, I tried a couple of different finishing techniques.
First, I created a spider web design using a mixture of sour cream and heavy cream. I put the mixture in a piping bag, and then piped concentric circles on top of the soup. Then, I dragged a toothpick outward from the center to pull the circles into a spiderweb design.

I also used thinly sliced provolone cheese to cut bat and skull designs to float on top of the soup.

I included “play with your food” in the name to reference Morticia scolding Wednesday for not playing with her dinner. Thankfully, our soup didn’t writhe around like the dark purple goop in Wednesday’s bowl.
Gomez’s Fear-falle Caprese Salad
Gomez is known for his signature striped suit. So, to pay homage to the eccentric patriarch, I made a pasta salad with striped farfalle noodles.
These farfalle noodles get their unique stripes from squid ink. I had a tough time tracking these noodles down locally, so I ordered them online from World Market. However, you can also find similar options on Amazon!
This dish was a twist on my caprese salad recipe. To prepare, I used the following ingredients:
Dressing:
• ½ cup olive oil
• 2 Tbl white wine vinegar
• 2 cloves garlic
• 2 tsp black pepper
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 tsp Dijon mustard
• ½ tsp oregano
Balsamic Glaze: (simmered on stove until thickened)
• 1 cup balsamic vinegar
• 4 Tbl honey
Pasta Salad:
• 8oz Striped Farfalle, uncooked
• 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
• 8oz fresh mozzarella – prepared into skulls
• ½ red onion, sliced
• ½ cup fresh basil, gently hand-torn
To make the mozzarella skulls, I used my trusty skull mold and microwaved the cheese in 15-minute bursts until it conformed to the mold. Then, I stored them in the refrigerator until it was time to use.
I also made my dressing ahead of time and stored it in the fridge overnight so the flavors could mature.
To assemble the pasta salad, I boiled the farfalle and drizzled with olive oil to prevent the noodles from sticking. Once cooled, I combined the pasta with the remaining salad ingredients and tossed in the dressing. To finish, I drizzled everything with our balsamic glaze.

This was our first experience with squid ink pasta, and I felt the flavor was subtle and enjoyable. The kids loved the striking appearance of the noodles, and we all agreed that squid ink seemed like a unique ingredient that might appear on the Addams Family dinner table!
Cousin Itt’s Hair-Raising Pasta
As a child, my absolute favorite Addams Family member was Cousin Itt. I thought he was the cutest thing, especially his gibberish language. Now, my own kiddos are big Cousin Itt fans. So, of course, this fan-favorite character deserved a spot on our menu.
Maybe it’s the Italian heritage, but when I look at Itt, I immediately think of angel hair pasta. So, I served angel hair pasta with my great-grandmother’s amazing marinara sauce for dinner.

His hat and sunglasses were made of toasted rye bread. I smeared the toast with butter and garlic salt to serve as a lazy garlic bread accompaniment to the dish.
I thought the pasta captured his gorgeous locks rather well!
Thing’s Hand Pies
And now we come to the Addams Family’s right-hand man – Thing! Hand pies were the obvious menu item to represent the loyal, disembodied hand.
To make the hand shapes, I traced my hand on cardboard to create a stencil. Then, I used the stencil to cut hand shapes out of my store-bought pie crusts.
I placed half the hands on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet to fill with our ground beef filling.

Once the hands were filled, I topped them with a second layer of pie dough and pressed the edges together with a fork. Before baking, I brushed each hand pie with egg wash and cut steam vents.
I started baking at 375 for 10 minutes, then dropped the temp to 350 for an extra 20 minutes until golden brown.

To finish, I added sliced almonds for the fingernails and piped black stitching.

Pugsley’s Poisonous Punch
Pugsley and Wednesday’s toxic lemonade stand inspired this poisonous concoction for our Addams Family dinner. I used the following ingredients for our punch:
- Brewed Butterfly Pea Tea, chilled
- Blue Gatorade
- Sprite
- Grenadine
- Fresh Lemon Juice
- Black Edible Glitter
- Black Sanding Sugar
- “Poison Apples” and Blackberries, for garnish
To create our poison apples, I soaked sliced Granny Smith apples in brewed butterfly pea tea and lemon juice overnight to give them their purple hue.
When it was time to build the drink, I rimmed four lowball glasses with black sanding sugar and filled them with ice.
To mix the punch, I filled a mixing glass half full with brewed butterfly pea tea and squeezed in fresh lemon juice to achieve a vibrant purple color. Then, I added a healthy pour of blue Gatorade and Grenadine before stirring in the edible black glitter. I didn’t measure the ingredients during this process; I strictly went by appearance and personal taste.
Once combined, I poured the mixture into each glass until ¾ full. Then, I topped them with Sprite and gave one final stir to combine and get the glitter swirling!

To garnish, I speared three poison apple slices and a blackberry with a cocktail sword. You know how the Addamses love playing with swords!
Wednesday’s Graveyard Cupcakes
For a devilishly delightful dessert, I was inspired by one of Wednesday’s favorite haunts – the graveyard.
Our cupcakes were made using chocolate cake and chocolate buttercream recipes from Add a Pinch. After frosting, I coated the cupcakes with crushed Oreo cookies to mimic dirt.
I decorated the cupcakes with chocolate pieces made with my gravestone and skull candy molds. Then, I used green frosting and a Wilton 233 piping tip to create tufts of grass around the gravestones.

These cemetery sweets were a deadly delicious ending to our Addams Family dinner.
