A Hamilton Themed Dinner – Featuring Recipes from Liberty Tree Tavern!

This week, we threw a Hamilton Themed Dinner party featuring recipes from Walt Disney World’s colonial-themed restaurant – Liberty Tree Tavern!

With the Fourth of July quickly approaching, I wanted to get patriotic for this week’s Disney Themed Dinner.  My kiddos are obsessed with the music from Hamilton, so I figured that would be a great Disney+ offering to pay tribute to some of our founding fathers!

As far as the dinner offerings were concerned, my mind immediately went to Walt Disney World’s Liberty Square in Magic Kingdom.  This themed land transports guests to colonial times, where they can admire replicas of the Liberty Bell, Liberty Tree, and audio-animatronics of our former presidents.   Liberty Square is also home to the popular Disney restaurant – Liberty Tree Tavern!

This restaurant is designed to resemble an elegant colonial inn serving up traditional New England-inspired meals.  Guests are treated to a family-style “Patriot Platter” featuring roasted turkey breast, pot roast, oven-roasted pork, and traditional sides.  Think Thanksgiving – all year round!  And lucky for us, many of these official Disney recipes are available online!  I went to work collecting recipes so we could have our very own Liberty Tree Tavern meal for our Hamilton Themed Dinner party.  Who wouldn’t want a taste of Thanksgiving dinner in July?!

Entrée – Liberty Tree Tavern Pot Roast

For our main entrée, I found the recipe for Liberty Tree Tavern’s Pot Roast on AllEars.net.  I have heard rave reviews about this famous Disney pot roast and couldn’t wait to try the recipe out myself!  I did tweak the recipe slightly to make preparation easier at home.  For example, I decided to utilize my crockpot to cook the roast rather than the oven.  I simply tossed my raw veggies, seasonings, and liquids in the crockpot, and placed my seared roast on top of everything.  I set the crockpot to LOW and let it work its magic.  Six hours later, we had a beautiful pot roast ready to enjoy for our Hamilton Themed Dinner!

I was very happy with how this roast turned out!  The meat was perfectly seasoned and tender.  The recipe called for the veggies to be strained from the gravy, but I left them in the pot roast and served them up with the meat.  Delicious!  This is definitely a recipe I will use again for pot roast.

Traditional Sides

Liberty Tree Tavern Stuffing

We LOOOOVVVEE stuffing for Thanksgiving at my household.  And while I cherish my very own stuffing recipe, I was excited to test out this Disney recipe from Magical Recipes that utilizes cornbread!  While the official recipe calls for 12 cups of cornbread…that seemed like A LOT to me.  I decided to just buy a box of cornbread mix, bake a pan, and use that for our stuffing.  While probably closer to 6 cups of cornbread, I thought the ratio was perfect with the celery, onion, and turkey stock in the recipe.

This was another recipe I tweaked to make crockpot friendly.  The crockpot is my BEST friend in the kitchen, so if I can use it to avoid busy evenings of cooking over a hot stove – I sure will!  For this recipe, I toasted the cornbread cubes in the oven until they were nice and crunchy.  Once the cornbread was ready, I added all the ingredients to the crockpot, poured in the broth, and gave a few good stirs to incorporate everything.  After cooking for four hours on LOW, our Liberty Tree Tavern Stuffing was ready!

This stuffing recipe was decent and went over well with the family.  But I felt the cornbread made it too sweet for my personal tastes.  This could be due to the boxed cornbread having a higher sugar content; something to keep in mind when preparing your own stuffing!

Liberty Tree Tavern Cranberry Relish

For our second side dish, I served up some Liberty Tree Tavern Cranberry Relish with another recipe I found over at Magical Recipes.  This recipe called for frozen cranberries, which I could not find at my local grocery store.  I did, however, find fresh cranberries.  Score!  Since I was working with fresh berries, I decided to make this recipe on the stovetop.  Again, we are tweaking recipes.  Sorry, Disney!

For Thanksgiving, I always make our cranberry sauce a couple days ahead of time.  And that is exactly what I did here as well!  To make the cranberry relish on the stovetop, I combined all the ingredients in a saucepan and cooked over medium-low heat until most of the cranberries had popped.  When the sauce had cooled, I stored in the fridge until we were ready to serve!

This cranberry sauce was pretty tasty, but MUCH sweeter than the typical cranberry sauce I make for Thanksgiving.  If you have a sweet tooth, this cranberry relish is for you!  My kids certainly do, so they thought this was a great side dish for our Hamilton Themed Dinner.

Dessert – Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake

This is one of the most FAMOUS desserts in Walt Disney World.  Many guests rush to snag reservations for Liberty Tree Tavern JUST to get a piece of this Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake.  For those who have not yet been fortunate enough to dine at Liberty Tree Tavern – this one is for you!

I found this Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake recipe over at the Disney Food Blog.  I was a little nervous to take this treat on because I’ve never baked anything like it before, but the recipe came together fairly easy.

The recipe suggests you prepare the cakes in a jumbo muffin tin, which I highly recommend if you have one in order to get those crispy edges on each serving.  I had to resort to a 9×13 pan, which caused a longer cooking time on my end.

As you can see from the photo, my cake slices got a bit messy – we’ll blame it on the ooey gooiness!  I think the jumbo muffin pans would have yielded a result truer to what you would see at Liberty Tree Tavern.  BUT the cake was delicious, nonetheless.  While way sweet for me, the kids loved it.  It was a great treat to end our Hamilton Themed Dinner and a Movie.
