Star Wars: Hoth Battle Party
We celebrated my little Star Wars fan’s fifth birthday with a Hoth Battle party!
For the past couple years, my son has been all about Star Wars. Trips to Galaxy’s Edge have been highlights of Disney vacations, and visiting Darth Vader is now a beloved tradition. But in all the Star Wars galaxy, there’s one thing my little guy loves above all else – Imperial Walkers.
His fascination with them began within the pages of his Star Wars board book, and then grew after coming face to face with his first AT-AT in Walt Disney World. Discovering my husband’s old N64 game (Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire) sealed the deal, as he cruised through the sky in a snowspeeder bringing down AT-ATs, AT-STs, and probe droids during the Battle of Hoth.
For the past year, he has insisted on having a Hoth Battle birthday party, and I fully embraced the challenge. We already hosted a Star Wars party for his third birthday, but this time I wanted to take a different approach. So, during my party planning, I decided to take inspiration from the ice planet, Hoth, and incorporate as many of his beloved Imperial Walkers as I could. Considering our hometown is very much a frozen tundra in January – the theme was quite fitting!

Hoth Party DIY Décor
There’s not a lot of Hoth representation out there (probably because The Empire Strikes Back came out over 45 years ago), so I knew I’d have to DIY a lot of our party décor.
Hoth Party Signage
The first piece of décor I made for our party was a postcard-style Hoth portrait.

I used Canva to create the design, then ordered the image as a 5×7 print. You can download the free design below!

Star Wars Paper Snowflakes
Since our Hoth Battle party embraced the themes of Star Wars and winter, I decided it would be fun to create Star Wars paper snowflakes.

The templates I used came from Anthony Herrera Designs, but unfortunately his website is no longer live. However, if you search his name on Pinterest, you will find several of his amazing snowflake templates.
Flying TIE-Fighters
Next up on my DIY list was our TIE-Fighters. I found a tutorial to create our fighters from Gina Tepper.

These were easily assembled using inexpensive craft store items and materials you probably already have at home, such as recycled fruit cups, apple sauce pouch caps, foam board, and Styrofoam balls.
Hanging Probe Droids
My son is absolutely fascinated by probe droids, so I knew we had to incorporate them into his Hoth party as well. I enlisted the help of my husband for this DIY.

He cut the probe droid shapes out of black poster board, then affixed two LED puck lights in each one so they glowed on both sides. They looked so awesome!

The probe droids are now hanging in my son’s room. And since the LED lights shine in a variety of colors, they can be customized each night at bedtime to fit the mood!
Paper Lanterns
My final DIY project for the party was paper lanterns I made with templates from Adventure in a Box. They have tons of Star Wars designs to choose from, but I opted to go with Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers.

I cut the designs out of cardstock with an exacto knife, then used parchment paper to serve as a translucent window. LED tea lights added a gentle flickering glow to complete the look.
Hoth Battle Artwork
The final bit of décor I was most excited about was created by the birthday boy himself. He is a little budding artist, with a large focus on Star Wars-inspired works – particularly the Hoth Battle!
So, I commissioned him to create a few portraits, and he was thrilled with the task. Once we picked out our favorites, I had them professionally printed and framed.

It was a fun way for him to contribute to the party, and he was so proud of his creations!
Hoth Party Food
No party is complete without a delicious spread of snacks. In addition to pizza and a fruit platter, I created a few Hoth-inspired dishes to tie into our party theme.
AT-AT Cheeseball
Cheeseballs are one of my go-tos for a themed party, so of course I had to create a special cheeseball for our Hoth Battle party.
For this cheeseball, I used a recipe from One Sweet Appetite and topped it with the image of an AT-AT.
To create our AT-AT stencil, I printed off an image to fit our cheeseball, then traced it on parchment paper. Then, I used an exacto knife to cut out the image, placed the stencil on the cheeseball, and filled the empty spaces with black pepper.

To serve, I surrounded the cheeseball with crackers and slices of cheese cut into snowflakes. We were celebrating an ice planet, after all!
Storm Trooper Caprese Salad
For a healthy side dish, I made a caprese salad with mozzarella Storm Troopers.
The caprese salad recipe is my own creation, made with the following ingredients:
Dressing:
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2.5 Tbl olive oil
- 1 Tbl white wine vinegar
- 1 tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp Dijon mustard
- ¼ tsp oregano
Balsamic Glaze:
- 1 cup balsamic vinegar
- 4 Tbl honey
Salad:
- 20oz cherry tomatoes, halved
- 16oz mozzarella pearls
- ½ cup chopped fresh basil
To make our Storm Troopers, I melted the mozzarella in a Storm Trooper mold and let it cool until set. Then, I combined them with the rest of our salad ingredients and dressing.

Once everything was combined, I drizzled the top with our balsamic glaze. It was delicious!
Hoth Battle Punch
For a fun birthday party beverage, I created a Hoth Battle punch. Our punch was a simple mix of Sprite and Hawaiian Punch Berry Blue Typhoon.
To serve, I rimmed our punch glasses with shredded coconut and filled each glass with blueberries and AT-AT ice cubes. I made the ice cubes using an AT-AT mold I found on Amazon.

A snowflake cocktail pick completed the icy Hoth planet look!

Tauntaun Cookies
As a child, one of the Hoth scenes in Empire Strikes Back that stuck out the most was when Han sliced open a Tauntaun to keep Luke warm.

So, when I stumbled across a recipe for Tauntaun cookies from Jenn Fujikawa, I knew I had to make them for the party.
These Tauntaun cookies are essentially stacked sugar cookies – with a surprise inside! The surprise, being candy meant to resemble the Tauntaun’s guts. I knew my kids would love them.

Making the cookies, however, was a labor of love. Unless you have a Tauntaun cookie cutter (and I don’t believe many do), each Tauntaun needs to be cut from the dough by hand. And each cookie requires three Tauntauns!

But it was so worth it – they looked awesome! I experimented with different candies for the guts, but particularly enjoyed the effects of the Twizzlers and sour gummy worms.

Wampa Cupcakes
I also had to represent Hoth’s fearsome Wampa somewhere in our party, and decided Wampa cupcakes would be a fun treat!

I first made a small batch of chocolate cupcakes using a go-to recipe from Celebrating Sweets.
While the cupcakes were baking, I piped out chocolate for the Wampa’s horns and royal icing for the Wampa’s eyes and mouth onto parchment paper. Once they dried, I would transfer them to the cupcakes.
To decorate, I spread white buttercream frosting on each cupcake, then topped them with shredded coconut for the fur. Then, I simply popped on the facial details, and they were ready!

Hoth Battle Cake
The thing my son wanted most for his party was a Hoth Battle cake. At first, I wasn’t exactly sure how to pull it off. I’m by no means a professional baker, and as I mentioned before, there’s not a lot of Hoth party supplies out there.
But then, I stumbled upon this adorable Star Wars advent calendar on Amazon. As I looked it over, I happily realized there were a lot of Hoth elements in this product!
So, I ordered it and had a secret Star Wars Christmas party for myself as I opened every compartment in one go. It certainly felt like Christmas, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled with what was inside! An AT-AT, snowspeeder, laser cannon, Wampa, and even Luke and Han in their Hoth attire. Not to mention other quintessential elements like the Millennium Falcon and additional popular characters. I certainly had enough components to make this work!
I baked our cake with a vanilla cake recipe from Celebrating Sweets, but I reserved some of the batter to make a single cupcake to use for the Wampa cave. Once everything was cool, I placed the cupcake on the sheet cake, and frosted it all with vanilla buttercream.
After frosting, I cut a small hole out of the cupcake to create the cave opening, then filled the inside with black frosting. Then, I got to have fun creating a scene with all my…I mean – my son’s, new toys!

Before finishing, I decided we needed a few more AT-ATs to complete the scene. There were at least a dozen at the Hoth Battle, after all. And they are my son’s favorites!
So, I utilized my AT-AT mold once again to create additional walkers out of almond bark to top the cake.

He absolutely loved it!
Hoth Battle Party Presents
After cake, it was time for presents! I wrapped the present in plain white paper, and my husband decorated it with various Hoth designs.

We pulled my son’s Wampa rug out of his Star Wars bedroom to add to the décor and supervise presents.
I was excited for him to open the gift inside – his very own probe droid from Galaxy’s Edge. I’d say we did the Hoth Battle theming justice!

I hope you enjoyed our Star Wars Hoth Battle birthday party and found inspiration for your own Star Wars celebrations. May the Force be with you!
