Noelle Themed Dinner
This week, we enjoyed a Christmas themed dinner to the Disney+ holiday comedy, Noelle!
Noelle Kringle is the daughter of Santa Claus. After her father retires, it is Noelle’s job to support her brother (Nick) and ensure he is ready to inherit the Santa role. Unfortunately, Nick gets cold feet and flees the North Pole. To save Christmas, Noelle embarks on a search-and-recover mission to retrieve her brother from the unfamiliar world outside the North Pole.
Noelle is a charming story full of holiday fun that we look forward to watching every year! There are several fun food references that inspired me to create this Noelle themed dinner. Some of our dishes reflected Noelle’s idyllic life in the North Pole, while others were inspired by her adventures in Phoenix, Arizona.
Alex’s Red and Green Egg Rolls
During her travels, Noelle befriends a father and son who share their favorite Christmas tradition with her – getting red and green egg rolls from their favorite Chinese restaurant.
So, for our Noelle themed dinner, I thought it would be fun to make our own red and green egg rolls!
Right off the bat, I will admit this dish was significantly more difficult to execute than I hoped it would be. The troubles started when I realized I would have to make our colored egg roll wrappers from scratch. I also failed to find a recipe that demonstrated how to make these colorful wrappers, so I had to go rogue with this dish.
To get started, I used a recipe from Budget 101 to make our dough. Then, I separated my dough and added red and green food coloring to each half. This sounded easy in my mind, but indeed it was NOT!
I kneaded the dough for what felt like forever to get the color incorporated, and resigned myself to the fact that my hands would be bright green for a couple days after. Granted, this could have been avoided if I had the foresight to procure some rubber gloves for this task.
Once my dough was colored, I began rolling it out as thin as possible. Getting the egg roll wrappers paper thin was incredibly difficult with my primitive kitchen tools, but I persevered!
I filled our egg rolls with one of my favorite recipes from The Kitchen Magpie, and then fried them on the stove.
During this whole process, I was worried this endeavor was a waste of time and would inevitably end up in the trash. BUT I’m happy to say, they turned out great! I was thrilled with how the red and green colors came through, and they tasted delicious. Whew!
Elf Polly’s Guaca-What?
Noelle isn’t alone during her adventures in Phoenix – she is accompanied by her childhood nanny, Elf Polly. While Noelle tracks down her brother, Polly keeps an eye on the reindeer while simultaneously finding ways to enjoy herself. She does this by experiencing the local flair, including new foods like guacamole.
So, for our Noelle themed dinner, I decided to make guacamole. But to make it *Christmas* I served it as a guacamole wreath!
To make our guacamole, I combined the following:
- 3 ripe avocados
- 1 can Rotel (drained)
- ¼ cup red onion (chopped)
- ¼ cup cilantro (chopped)
- 1 clove garlic (minced)
- 2 Tbl sour cream
- 1 Tbl lime juice (about 1/2 lime)
- ½ tsp cumin
- Salt to taste
I spread our guacamole on a plate around an upside-down cup to create the hollow ring shape of the wreath. Then, I topped it off with cherry tomatoes and cilantro leaves to resemble holly accents. A healthy and festive snack!
Noelle’s North Pole Waffles
Every morning, Polly brings Noelle a platter of fresh waffles for breakfast. So, I decided to make some waffles with a Christmas spin!
To add a Christmas spin to our waffles, I decided to make them look like Christmas trees. I made waffle batter using a recipe from Spend With Pennies and added a touch of green food coloring. When they were done cooking, I had the kids add candies and sprinkles to resemble ornaments on a Christmas tree.
My kids aren’t used to me being this indulgent for dinner, so this was a really special treat for them! Calories don’t count during the holidays, right?
Nick’s Double Hot Chocolate
Overwhelmed with his Santa duties, Noelle decides to take Nick out for hot chocolates and a pep talk.
So, of course, we had to have some hot chocolate for our Noelle themed dinner!
Later in the film, Noelle discovers instant hot chocolate in a Phoenix convenience store and remarks it “sounds naughty.” Well, this busy mom took the naughty route and used instant mix.
Nick prefers his hot chocolate with extra whipped cream and crushed peppermint, so that’s exactly how I served ours. Despite being naughty, it was delicious!
Santa’s Gingerbread Cookies
In the beginning of the film, we see a plate of gingerbread cookies left out for Santa by a young Nick and Noelle.
I love making gingerbread cookies this time of year, so I decided they’d be the perfect treat for our Noelle themed dinner!
My favorite gingerbread recipe comes from Dish ‘n’ the Kitchen. You may recognize this recipe from our Rudolph Themed Dinner and our Nightmare Before Christmas Themed Dinner – it’s that good!
After the cookies were baked, I decorated them with icing to resemble the gingerbread men from the film. The kids thought they were very cute, and delicious too!
