Home Alone Themed Dinner

This week’s themed dinner was inspired by the classic Christmas film – Home Alone

Mistakenly left alone while his family traveled to Paris for the holidays, 8-year-old Kevin finds creative ways to fend for himself in their absence.  To make matters worse, Kevin must face off against two burglars in a showdown to protect his home.

We love watching this movie during Christmastime and enjoy lots of laughs as we quote our favorite scenes.

There are several food references throughout the film, which made it a lot of fun creating this Home Alone Dinner menu.  Read on, to see how we ate like unsupervised 8-year-olds while enjoying this holiday classic!

Home Alone Dinner Menu:
Entrees are Little Nero's Cheese Pizza and Kevin's Microwave Mac and Cheese. Side dish is Buzz's Tarantula Fruit Kabobs. Dessert is Rubbish Ice Cream Sundaes and Drinks are Fuller's Pepsi and First Class Champagne

“A lovely cheese pizza, just for me”

When considering food from the film to include on our Home Alone Dinner menu, I immediately thought of Little Nero’s pizza.

We first see a delivery from Little Nero’s in the beginning of the film as the house bustles with Kevin’s large extended family.  Kevin is dismayed to find ALL the cheese pizza was eaten without him, even though his family knows he hates the other pizzas with toppings.  Fortunately for Kevin, he gets his cheese pizza fix later in the film.

In the iconic pizza delivery scene, Kevin plays carefully selected dialogue from the fictional gangster movie, Angels With Filthy Souls, as the delivery driver approachesBelieving the resident adult is a mobster about to pump him full of lead, the delivery driver frantically abandons the pizza on the doorstep while running for his life.

“Keep the change, ya filthy animal.

So, of course, pizza had to be on the menu!  And in honor of Kevin, we went with a EXTRAMOSTBESTEST Cheese Pizza from our very own ancient Rome-inspired purveyor of pizza – Little Caesars.  To make it extra fun for the kids, I printed a Little Nero’s pizza label and taped it to the top of our pizza box.

“Bless this highly nutritious microwavable macaroni and cheese dinner and the people who sold it on sale”

To go with our carbs and cheese, I decided to serve up MORE carbs and cheese.  Hey, this menu is inspired by an 8-year-old’s diet after all!

Our mac-and-cheese entrée was a nod to Kevin’s microwave dinner he prepared right before his confrontation with the burglars.  And let’s give Kevin some credit, he was very responsible to use a coupon when making that purchase!

Our boxed mac and cheese entree Home Alone dinner

Since I was feeding a family of five, I bought a box of stovetop Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.  I haven’t touched the stuff since I was a kid, and nostalgia hit me hard when I tasted it again!  While I prefer to make mac-and-cheese from scratch, it was fun to revisit the throwback boxed version while following in Kevin’s footsteps.

“Kevin, I’m going to feed you to my tarantula”

Realizing that our Home Alone Dinner wasn’t exactly the most nutritious meal, I knew I had to come up with a healthy side dish.  Kevin doesn’t eat a single fruit or vegetable in the film, so I had to get creative.  Enter – the tarantula.

Kevin’s big brother, Buzz, keeps a pet tarantula he loves to threaten Kevin with.  The spider makes several appearances throughout the film, most famously when Kevin places it directly on the face of a horrified burglar.  I could work with that!

“Buzz, your girlfriend. Woof!”

I decided to make tarantula fruit kabobs using grapes, blueberries, and raisins.  It took a lot of toothpicks and patience, but I was happy with how they turned out. The kids got a kick out of them too!

I also printed a photo of Buzz’s girlfriend to go with our décor. While there are jokes made at her expense in the film, I think she’s pretty adorable.

“Guys, I’m eating junk and watching rubbish.  You better come out and stop me”

Kevin eating sundae and watching "rubbish" in Home Alone

Early in the film, Kevin begins to realize he has the rule of the house.  But he hasn’t quite accepted that his family actually left him.  To test the waters, he creates a massive ice cream sundae with all the toppings he could find while watching Angels With Filthy Souls.  If his family were really home, they’d put an end to this right?!

Well, no one stopped Kevin from enjoying his sugar overload and violent gangster movie pairing.  And I had my inspiration for our themed dessert offering – Rubbish Sundaes!

Our "rubbish" ice cream sundaes for our home alone dinner

We already had three different types of ice cream in the freezer as well as whipped cream, M&Ms, sprinkles, peppermint pieces, and chocolate syrup.  I added a couple Christmas cookies to make them festive, topped them with cherries, and – voilà!  We had our very own sundaes worthy of Kevin’s approval.  Not to mention, it was a great way to use up some of the random ingredients in our cupboards.

Wet Bandits’ Beverages

There were a couple different beverage options I considered for our Home Alone Themed Dinner.  The most obvious choice was Pepsi!

“Fuller! Go easy on the Pepsi.”

We see the popular drink throughout the film, but most notably when Fuller (Kevin’s younger cousin) is guzzling it before bed.  Kevin was warned he and Fuller were sharing a bed that night, and concerns of potential bed wetting ensue.

“Champagne, please. It’s free isn’t it?!”

A more subtle beverage reference comes from dear old Uncle Frank as he loads up on complimentary champagne during the flight to France.  I thought it might be fun for the kids to enjoy some sparkling apple juice in champagne flutes to get in on the fun.
