Under Wraps: A Mummy Themed Dinner

We kicked off spooky season with a viewing of Disney’s Under Wraps accompanied by a mummy themed dinner!

Released in 1997, Under Wraps was the first ever Disney Channel Original Movie.  The story follows an Egyptian mummy who is brought back to life by a mystical amulet.  He is discovered by three children who befriend him and give him the nickname, Harold.  Crazy antics ensue while Harold attempts to navigate the modern world and reunite with his lost love.

I think most Disney-loving 90s kids can agree – Under Wraps is one of the best Disney Channel Original Movies. So, it’s no surprise it’s the first original movie to be remade as well as receive a sequel!

Unfortunately, the original Under Wraps is not available on Disney+.  However, you can stream it for free on YouTube HERE!

Our Under Wraps dinner menu was inspired by all things mummy!

Mummy Cheese Ball

Cheeseballs have become a staple of our themed dinners.  They’re so fun to get creative with, and my family loves them!  However, I’m not sure if this dish qualifies as a cheeseball since it’s in mummy form!

I wanted to try something new with this cheeseball, so I created my own recipe with fresh garlic and herbs.  I used the following ingredients:

  • 16oz cream cheese
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 8 oz block sharp white cheddar, grated
  • ¼ cup green onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp parsley
  • 2 tsp dill
  • 1 tsp marjoram
  • 1 tsp basil
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • ¼ tsp salt

After combining the ingredients, I let the mixture firm up in the fridge before shaping it into a mummy.

Once I was happy with my mummy shape, it was time to give him some bandages.  I mixed additional cream cheese with a splash of milk to create a smooth consistency for piping.  Then, I piped the mummy wrappings over the cheeseball using a basket weave piping tip.  All that was left was to give him eyes and a mouth, which I created with black olives.

I think Harold would have been impressed with his lookalike!

Scarab Deviled Eggs

Harold’s magical amulet features a scarab beetle design.  The scarab was a significant symbol in ancient Egypt, so I wanted to represent it in our dinner.

I decided the best way to capture the beetle’s likeness was with black olives, so I made deviled eggs with scarab garnishes!

This was tediously done be slicing black olives into the head, body, and leg shapes.  It was a lot of work, but I think it paid off!

My family eats olives like candy, so they were big fans of the scarab beetles!

Mummy Pizzas

Pizza and movie night are the perfect pairing.  And luckily, it was super simple to make mummy pizzas for our Under Wraps dinner!

I loaded each mini pizza with sauce, cheese, and pepperonis, then baked them in the oven.  When they were almost ready, I pulled them out and added black olive eyes (we’re doing lots of olive art for this dinner) and thin strips of provolone for the wrappings.  Then, I baked them a little longer until the cheese was nice and melty.

They were delicious!

Wrapped Mummy Dogs

I also made wrapped mummy dogs for our Under Wraps dinner.  I’ve seen these cuties circulating Pinterest over the years, but I’ve never actually made them myself!

Our mummy dogs were made using a recipe from House of Nash Eats.  It was super simple!  All you need are hotdogs, a sheet of crescent roll dough, and some serious wrapping skills.

I cut arms and legs into the hotdogs before wrapping them with the dough.  Once they were done baking, I added two dots of mustard for the eyes.  They were a big hit with the family, especially my three-year-old!

Rice Krispie Treat Mummies

We ended our Under Wraps dinner with a mummy inspired dessert – Rice Krispie Treat Mummies!

I made these by dunking Rice Krispie Treats in melted white chocolate, then sprinkling them with crushed Oreos to create an aged look.  Then, I used more melted white chocolate to pipe bandages across the mummies and topped them with candy eyes.
