Alice in Wonderland Tea Party

This week, we drank tea and played croquet during our outdoor Alice in Wonderland tea party!

When my daughter turned three, I wanted to throw her an Alice in Wonderland tea party in our backyard.  I made most of the decorations myself, and even hand-painted a croquet set to look like the flamingos and hedgehogs from the film.

But as luck would have it, storms rolled in on her birthday, and the party had to be relocated inside.  It was still a grand time, but I was a little disappointed it wasn’t the outdoor Alice in Wonderland tea party I had envisioned.

I decided to hold on to most of the decorations just in case.  The unused croquet set was stashed in the garage and remained there for years.

Finally, this year, I decided – why not give it another go?!  So, I dug out the decorations, dusted off the croquet set, and threw another Alice in Wonderland tea party for the kids in our backyard!

Decorations

As I mentioned before, I made most of the birthday decorations myself.

To greet our guests, I made a tea party wreath and banner using as assortment of tea pots, cups, and keys cut from floral paper.  I also used a printable from Disney Family to create our Doorknob.

I enlisted the help of my eldest daughter to create our Mome Raths.  She glued together colored popsicle sticks and googly eyes, then attached feathers to the top for their hair.  They turned out so cute!

Our Golden Afternoon bouquet was made using another printable from Disney Family.  I also purchased some white roses from the dollar store and had the girls paint them red – just like Alice!

And finally, I made our cupcake wrappers using a printable teacup design from Marvelous Mommy.

Party Supplies

I purchased the remaining party supplies from Amazon.  There were tons of great Alice in Wonderland items that were perfect for our tea party!

Our paper plates, cups, and napkins came from the Talking Tables Tea Party collection on Amazon. They have tons of great tea party designs including some specific to Alice in Wonderland!

It was fortunate I still had most of the party supplies and decorations on hand so I could reuse them for our outdoor Alice in Wonderland tea party!

For our backyard Alice in Wonderland tea party, we enjoyed an assortment of finger foods inspired by traditional tea party offerings with an Alice in Wonderland twist.

Savory Eats

Our savory bites for the tea party were finger sandwiches inspired by the card soldiers in the film.

I made our finger sandwiches two ways, to reflect the red and black suits.

The first sandwich was ham, cheese, and strawberry jam on white bread.  The second was cream cheese, cucumber, and dill on rye bread.

To punch out each suit, I used playing card cookie cutters I purchased on Amazon.  I think they turned out rather pretty!

Sweet Treats

Our first sweet offering was chocolate covered strawberries.  I had hoped to make the strawberries pink with purple stripes to represent the Cheshire Cat.  Disclaimer: This was my first-time making chocolate covered strawberries.

The result was…not quite what I was going for.  But despite their somewhat sloppy appearance, they were very delicious.  I call that a win!

I also served mini strawberry tarts as a nod to the Queen of Hearts.  But because I don’t have a tart pan, I cheated and used sugar cookie dough in my mini muffin pan.  Then, I filled them with strawberry pie filling and topped them with sugar cookie hearts.

And finally, I made tea bag cookies using my go-to sugar cookie recipe.  I cut the tea bag shapes into my dough by hand and included a small hole at the top for the tea bag tag.  When they finished baking, I iced them and attached the tags with kitchen twine.

We’re All Mad Here

I’m glad we gave our outdoor Alice in Wonderland tea party another go.  It gave me a chance to use those decorations I’ve been saving, and we FINALLY played croquet!

And while we weren’t celebrating a birthday this time around, our tea party happened to occur on everyone’s un-birthday!  And that is a fantastic occasion to celebrate 😉
