Wizard of Oz Themed Dinner
This week, we dined over the rainbow while enjoying a Wizard of Oz themed dinner!
I adored this film as a child, and still quote it to this day (I DO believe in spooks, I do, I do, I do!). And, to my dismay, most of my family had no idea what I was referencing! I knew that was something I had to remedy. And of course, I had to plan a themed dinner to accompany our movie night.
I have always associated The Wizard of Oz with Halloween. The main villain is a witch, after all! And with spooky season upon us, I knew this was the perfect time to enjoy our Wizard of Oz dinner.
Fun fact: this was not the first time I threw a Wizard of Oz party. When I was little, I had a Wizard of Oz themed birthday party, and it was one of my favorite birthdays. I made sure to incorporate some of those same party elements into our Wizard of Oz dinner.
So, follow along on the yellow brick road while we enjoy a special dinner inspired by The Wizard of Oz!
Over the Rainbow Fruit Bowl
Because our dinner menu was inspired by specific elements from the film, I decided to serve each dish during its corresponding movie moment. And first up, was our Over the Rainbow Fruit Bowl!
I created a rainbow of our kids’ favorite fruits and let them dish up as Dorothy sang Over the Rainbow. I thought I went way overboard with the amount of fruit I served, but those little flying monkeys finished every bite before I was ready to serve our next course. Yay to eating healthy!
Wicked Witch’s Flying Broomsticks
Next on the menu was our Wicked Witch’s Flying Broomsticks. I got the idea and recipe for these adorable morsels from One Little Project. They were super simple to make, and they looked so cute!
I handed out our broomsticks the moment Dorothy sees the Wicked Witch flying outside her house. The kids got a kick out of them!
Lollipop Guild’s Lollipops
Our next delicious snack was our Lollipop Guild’s Lollipops. I definitely broke my “no dessert before dinner” rule with this one. But the Lollipop Guild is such an iconic part of Munchkinland, and sharing a lollipop with Dorothy was a great way to immerse the kids in the story.
I found these lollipops at the Dollar Store, and I loved how they looked like miniature versions of the one Dorothy receives from the munchkins.
The kids HATED them…kidding! My kids never hate anything made of sugar, so of course they were thrilled with this menu item.
Tin Man’s Heart-Shaped Pizzas
When Dorothy meets the Tin Man who laments about not having a heart, I served some mini heart-shaped pizzas for the kids.
Pizza is always a win for dinner, and I have to say, I love how they turned out!
Cowardly Lion Sandwiches
My personal favorite character is the Cowardly Lion. He’s just so funny and endearing! To represent him on our menu, I made some Cowardly Lion Sandwiches.
These sandwiches were just your standard turkey and cheese. I used cheese crackers to create a mane, and sliced string cheese and peas for the eyes. His mouth and nose were made from cucumber.
I think food always tastes better when it’s *art* and the kids seemed to think so too.
“I’m Melting!” Punch
And now we come to the most famous scene in The Wizard of Oz – the demise of the Wicked Witch. Who knew a bucket of water could be so useful against such a powerful foe?
To capture this iconic moment from the film, I made a green punch to represent the melted witch. To make her floating hat, I used a black paper plate and construction paper.
I wish I could tell you the punch recipe I whipped up was amazing and delicious, but it wasn’t. The kids approved because of *SUGAR* but I was not a fan. It tasted like a green apple Jolly Rancher – too sweet and too tart at the same time. So, I cannot in good conscience share any sort of recipe here. But it looked awesome!
If you have a favorite green punch recipe, share it in the comments!
Melted Witch Cookies
To accompany our punch, I also made some Melted Witch Cookies. These were very simple to make, and they looked so cute!
For the cookie base, I baked sugar cookies and decorated them with green icing to represent the melted witch. The witch hats were made by securing Hershey’s Kisses to fudge-striped cookies with orange icing, and the broomsticks were made with pretzel sticks and Reese’s Minis.
It was the perfect treat to wrap up our Wizard of Oz themed dinner!
