The Santa Clause Themed Dinner

This week, we put on our Santa hats and enjoyed a themed dinner to the Christmas classic – The Santa Clause!

In The Santa Clause, Scott Calvin finds himself taking over the boots (literally) of Santa Claus after inadvertently startling him off his rooftop on Christmas Eve.  Scott teams up with his son, Charlie, to deliver the remaining presents and return to the North Pole.  Upon his return, however, the elves inform Scott he is now the new Santa (per the “Santa Clause”) and must resume his role next Christmas.

For our Santa Clause themed dinner menu, I took inspiration from several food references and characters in the film.

Santa Snack Board

Charcuterie is a great way to kick off dinner and movie nights, so I created a Santa Clause themed snack board.

The thing I really like about creating these boards is it’s easy to use whatever you have on hand.  Then, simply let your imagination run wild!

To create our Santa, I used a wheel of brie and carved his beard out of the rind.  His eyes were made with black olives, and his nose was cherry tomato.  To make his hat, I skewered rolled up slices of pepperoni.

The rest of the board was assembled with a collection of goodies I scrounged up in the kitchen.  Although I did make a special stop for our Christmas tree crackers – they’re just too cute!

Holiday Grand Slam

Scott dropped the ball on Christmas Eve when he torched Charlie and his turkey dinner.  But luckily, he had a backup plan – the local Denny’s.  It’s an American institution!

Denny’s – it’s always open!

So, we followed Scott’s lead and served breakfast for dinner.

Breakfast for dinner is my go-to on busy weeknights when our fridge is bare.  It’s easy to quickly throw something together, and better yet, the kids are always thrilled about it!

But for our Santa Clause themed dinner, I wanted to take our breakfast up a notch.  I decided to make our very own spin on the popular Denny’s Grand Slam – but make it *Christmas*!

So, I whipped up some pancakes with a recipe from Top Teen Recipes.  Then, I used strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and whipped cream to create Santa faces.  I also served eggs, sausage, and bacon as a nod to the original Denny’s Grand Slam.

Usually, our breakfast for dinner doesn’t involve copious amounts of whipped cream, so the kids were big fans!

Judy’s Perfect Hot Cocoa

The most memorable food reference from The Santa Clause is Judy the Elf’s hot cocoa.

Not too hot. Extra chocolate. Shaken, not stirred.

I remember watching this scene as a kid and wanting to sample that perfected hot chocolate recipe so bad!  So, of course, we had to have hot cocoa for our Santa Clause themed dinner.

You can use any hot chocolate recipe for your Santa Clause themed dinner.  But, if you want a recipe true to Judy’s description, the recipe from Binging with Babish is as close to Judy’s 1200-year-old recipe as you’ll find!

Charlie’s Snow Globe Cookies

Charlie’s magical snow globe is an important part of the film.  Head Elf Bernard gifted Charlie the snow globe so he could use it to see his father.  Charlie also uses the snow globe to remind Scott of his true calling as Santa.

So, to incorporate this magical element on our menu, I decided to make snow globe cookies.

I got the idea to make these cookies from YWM Family.  I used my go-to sugar cookie recipe and a vanilla buttercream as the base of my cookies.  Then, I got to have fun with sprinkles and icing decorations!

I ordered the following from Amazon and Michaels to create our snow globe cookies:

Clear Fillable Ornaments

Christmas Icing Decorations

Santa Icing Decorations

Snowflake Sprinkles

To complete the look, I topped each cookie with half of a clear ornament to create the snow globe dome.  They turned out pretty cute, and the kids absolutely loved them!
